Lithium-ion batteries are used in many rechargeable electronic devices we use throughout the College and at home. Cellphones, laptops, wireless headsets, cameras, smartwatches, portable chargers, & UPS backup power commonly have lithium-ion batteries.
These batteries are generally safe, however, they can have defects that need to be addressed immediately to prevent safety issues from occurring.
Extreme issues can include fire or explosion.
Safety Tips
Do not ignore swollen batteries
This is an example of a swollen lithium-ion battery in a laptop, and also of what NOT to do.
Report swelling of any College-issued laptop immediately to techsupport@sjcd.edu
Do not expose your laptop, cellphone, or other electronic devices in extreme temperatures
Do not store lithium-ion electronics in high temperatures, or below freezing temperatures; this includes storing them in vehicles. According to Texas DPS, a car’s inside temperature can reach 110 degrees even when the outside temperature is only 60 degrees.
Only Use Approved Batteries
Use original manufacturer approved chargers for your laptops and other lithium-ion electronics.
Do not store lithium-ion electronics in high temperatures, or below freezing temperatures; this includes storing them in vehicles.
